EU budget 2022: Speeding up Europe's recovery and progressing towards a green, digital and resilient future

The Commission has proposed an annual EU budget of €167.8 billion for 2022, to be complemented by an estimated €143.5 billion in grants under NextGenerationEU.

Their combined firepower will mobilise significant investments to boost the economic recovery, safeguard sustainability, and create jobs. It will prioritise green and digital spending in order to make Europe more resilient and fit for the future.

EU INSTITUTIONS REACH AGREEMENT ON DIGITAL COVID CERTIFICATE

On May 20, the European Parliament and Council agreed on the Regulation regarding the EU Digital Covid certificate which anticipates its implementation by the end of June. The negotiations on the certificate for the Commission have been led by Commissioner Didier Reynders in close cooperation with Vice-Presidents Vera Jourová and Margaritis Schinas and Commissioners Thierry Breton, Stella Kyriakides, and Ylva Johansson.

THE EUROPEAN CLIMATE LAW MARKS A NEW STEP TOWARDS EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL 

On April 21, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached an agreement regarding targets contained in the European Climate Law and the EU’s commitment to reach climate neutrality by 2050. The deal constitutes a milestone in the pathway outlined by the European Green Deal and sets out intermediate binding targets to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030.

EC ADOPTS EU ACTION PLAN TO MEET ZERO POLLUTION TARGET

On May 12, the Commission adopted the EU Action Plan “Towards Zero Pollution for air, water and soil” in the framework of the European Green Deal and as a fundamental theme for the EU Green Week. The plan combines both the objective of reducing emissions levels through EU policies and the support of technology instruments against pollution.

Specifically, among the actions that are required for the delivery of better results in line with the goals of the European Green Deal there are: achieving better air quality standards close to World Health Organisation recommendations, reviewing water quality standards, reducing soil pollution, reviewing EU waste law and adapt them to circular economy principles, reducing EU’s external pollution footprint.
